Cabinet reshuffle looms as Ramaphosa calls national address to announce changes to executive

South Africans may be in for a surprise on Thursday evening when President Cyril Ramaphosa addresses the nation on developments in his Cabinet.

Ramaphosa is expected to make an announcement on changes to the National Executive at 8.30pm, following growing pressure from political parties and labour unions.
Ramaphosa’s Cabinet has come under fire in recent weeks for the perceived failure to the country’s repose to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The country’s dwindling confidence in some ministers was compounded by last month’s deadly civil unrest where more than 300 people died and hundreds more arrested for looting, violence and damage to property.
The security cluster which includes Police Minister Bheki Cele, Intelligence Minister Ayanda Dlodlo and Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula have especially been criticised for butting heads following the unrest.
The economic cluster has not been spared criticism.
Ramaphosa also faces the tough decision about suspended Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.
The last major reshuffle under Ramaphosa’s administration was in 2019, including cutting down the number of ministries from 36 to 28.
