Coca-Cola Craven Week also place for future refs to stand out

While player talent identification is the core purpose of the annual Under-18 Coca-Cola Craven Week, the upcoming referees also fall under the spotlight.

Rasta Rashivhenge was one such whistle man identified at the Coca-Cola Craven Week in Welkom in 2010, which adds credence to the annual Under-18 Schools Rugby Tournament's payoff line "WhereHeroesAreMade".

Today the former Jeppe High School for Boys learner is a regular feature on the SA Rugby elite referees panel and recently graduated to the Super Rugby panel.

He goes by the nickname Rasta, but his name is Fhatuwani, which means "to be awake"

Trevor Cramer caught up with the affable ref at the Coca-Cola Craven Week at Kearsney College in Kwazulu-Natal...

He has been a regular feature on the IRB Sevens World Series since 2011 and has also chalked up a good deal of mileage in the Currie Cup, Vodacom Cup and Varsity Cup.

Rashivenge still sports a strong Aussie twang after a sabbatical from SA Rugby in Australia in 2014 and was listed as an Australian referee at the 2014 IRB Sevens World Series.

He has been back in his country of birth since 2015 and SA Rugby moved swiftly to tie him down till at least 2019.

Rasta is also the youngest referee to have had the whistle in a Currie Cup final.
