The star 34-year-old forward was ruled out of a 16-10 loss in Australia last month by a shoulder injury sustained in a first round defeat to New Zealand.

His recall is one of five changes to the Pumas team that performed poorly in Brisbane, with four of them among the forwards.

There is a new lock partnership with Matias Alemanno and Marcos Kremer taking over from Guido Petti and Tomas Lavanini.

Javier Ortega Desio comes into the back row with Tomas Lezana dropping to the bench for a match that pits Championship leaders South Africa against bottom-of-the-table Argentina.

In the one backline alteration, Emiliano Boffelli has recovered from an injury and takes over from Joaquin Tuculet at full-back.

A surprise is the retention of loosehead prop Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, who battled at scrum time in Australia.

The replacements include Castres back Benjamin Urdapilleta, who was not part of the matchday squads for the All Blacks and Wallabies Tests.

South Africa lead the Championship with seven points, defending champions New Zealand have six, Australia four and Argentina two.

A bonus-point win in Salta will ensure the Springboks of first place in a tournament trimmed from two rounds to one because the Rugby World Cup kicks off in Japan on September 20.

New Zealand have won six of the previous seven editions and Australia one.
