Despite the Pretoria side’s semi-final defeat against Western Province last weekend, they made a big impression during the domestic campaign by playing an effective expansive game plan.

The Bulls have always been known for their strong kicking game, but their running rugby has been a highlight, which saw them score 41 tries during the league phase.

In addition to this, a number of Bulls youngsters have excelled at senior level, including exciting No 15 Gelant. The 20-year-old praised his team-mates and coaches for helping him settle in.

“This season has been a great one for me. I enjoyed every moment of it,” Gelant told MyPlayers.co.za. “My main highlights were receiving my Man of the Match awards. I always try to be on top of my game and to be rewarded for it is something special in my eyes.

“I definitely give credit to the team. The senior players have taken me under their wing, which helped a lot. One player who has really mentored me from the start is Francois Hougaard, who gave me advice and took me through the ropes in the senior team.

“Coach Nollis Marais also has a big influence on the squad. He gives the players the freedom to play what we see in front of us. This suits my natural game perfectly. I love to have ball in hand and attack. As a team, the players have bought into this attacking game plan and it worked well for us.

“It’s going to be great for the Bulls to have him as the coach in Super Rugby. ‎He has done a great job with the Currie Cup team, so I’m excited to see what’s to come next year.”

Gelant, who hails from Knynsa and moved to Bulls country after matriculating at Outeniqua High School, added that he’s matured off the field too.

“‎I’ve been living in Pretoria for nearly two years now. I have settled in nicely. During my off time, I like to relax,” said Gelant.

“I’ve learned to balance my life. I make sure I make time for rugby, family, friends and my religion. I also hope to study through Unisa in the near future. It’s important to always remain humble and focused… no matter what you do.”

Looking ahead, Gelant wants to continue his growth at senior level. The Junior Springbok and Blitzbok also hopes to earn more national honours in the in the near future.

“I want to meet the standards I put out for myself. I want to remain consistent on the field and make a positive impact when possible,” said Gelant. “I’ve enjoyed the experience of representing my country at Under 20 and sevens levels. It’s always an honour playing for my country. If given the opportunity to play for South Africa heading into the Olympic Games, I’d take it with both hands.

“My goals in the short-term would be to establish myself as a player in the big leagues, especially ahead of Super Rugby next year. In the long term, it would be a dream come true to play for the Springboks.”
