Tanzanian Mohamed Mgunda and Thato Lingwati scored equalising goals for the home side after Zambian Mwape Musonda had twice given Leopards the lead.

Had Leopards retained a 2-1 advantage gained on 62 minutes they would have been favoured to finish first and secure a place next season in the richest African football league.

Leopards, who are based in northeastern town Thohoyandou, have four points after playing two of their four matches in the double-round mini-league.

Cosmos have one and travel to pointless Platinum Stars Wednesday for the final first round fixture.

At stake for the three clubs is a chance to compete for 29 million rand ($2.275 mn/1.930 mn euros) in the top-flight league and three cup competitions.

Both Cosmos and Leopards have played at the highest level in South Africa before while Platinum hope to avoid relegation after finishing second from bottom last season.

Cosmos are owned and coached by Jomo Sono, a South African football great robbed of the chance to play for his country by an apartheid-induced world ban.
