This follows Saturday's shock 2-0 Nedbank Cup semi-final defeat to Free State Stars at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban which saw police firing tear gas and stun grenades to disperse angry Kaizer Chiefs fans.

Ugly scenes showed fans invading the pitch and attacking the players and coaching staff. Spectators wearing Chiefs colours also thrashed television equipment and set fire to some seats at a venue.

There are also reports of spectators assaulting a female security guard.

Speaking after the match, Khompela expressed his disappointment with the fans' behaviour.

"We don't need to see this in football, I don't know where it comes from, but we don't need to create this culture," he told reporters. "Nobody wants to see this and we just regret that. We will have to move on and see what happens but it's just a pity. It's completely unlike our people."

Only this week Chiefs were fined R250,000 rand after supporters recently flung plastic bottles on the pitch following a heavy league defeat.

The Nedbank Cup was the Amakhozi's last chance of silverware this season.

Kaizer Chiefs general manager Bobby Motaung confirmed Komphela's departure from the Soweto giants at the post-match press conference.

"We have had to do a lot of reality checks. Players are not safe. People are not safe. The coach is not safe.

"The coach (Steve Komphela) is stepping down with immediate effect."
