The Dolphins announced on Wednesday that Proteas star David Miller will be leaving the franchise to join the Knights from next season.

Miller joins fellow Proteas player Kyle Abbott in leaving the KwaZulu Natal outfit. Abbott will be leaving the Dolphins for the Warriors.

Both players learnt much of their trade during their journey through the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union’s ranks and became invaluable members of the Sunfoil Dolphins squad.

“This has been an incredibly difficult decision for me,” explained Miller. “I was raised in KZN, schooled in KZN and have played much of my cricket for KZN and the Dolphins.”

“The direction the franchise is currently heading in is an extremely positive one, the Sahara Stadium Kingsmead has been turned around of late and the squad is full of talent that I’m sure will produce trophies for the franchise in the very near future.

“This, together with a new coach to compliment all the positive change, I am confident that very soon the Dolphins will be a real force to be reckoned with!

“I have however decided to move on as the timing is right in my career to step outside of my comfort zone and look to challenge myself with something new and fresh,” he added.

Like Miller, Abbott said the move was also a difficult decision.

“It’s sad that I’m leaving after eight years and I leave a place where I learnt my trade, but I’m looking forward to my new adventure,” said Abbott.

“I would like to thank everyone who has come out and supported over the last eight years; I encourage them to keep supporting local cricket and I hope to see everyone soon,” he added.

Sunfoil Dolphins CEO, Pete de Wet has wished the pair – both currently involved in the Kings XI Punjab’s IPL campaign – all the best for their future.

“It is always disappointing to lose players, particularly those of the calibre of David and Kyle,” said De Wet.

“We are however extremely grateful for all that they have brought to the Sunfoil Dolphins set-up, both on and off the field, and trust they will continue to make us proud, both locally and internationally in coming years.

“The last two months have seen significant changes at the Sunfoil Dolphins as we start to build for our future success, and all of this is being done to support our desire to be the number one franchise in South Africa,” he added.
