Mingling with the 'Super Fans'

Mingling with the 'Super Fans'

Instead of watching from his traditional perch in the media centre, Trevor Cramer decided to get among the fans this weekend at Loftus Versveld where the Bulls hosted the Cheetahs in a Super Rugby encounter.

While neither side has exactly set the world on fire form-wise this season and many fans remain very fickle, it is still evident that the die-hard fans back their teams through thick and thin.

Obviously Blue was the dominant colour, but there was a fair deal of orange also evident in the stands.

There were some families divided along team lines and even spouses in opposite camps to one another as well as those who had travelled from far to come and support their team.

But one thing is for certain - win or lose, Loftus always strikes me as being an ultimate family rugby experience.

Most seemed unconcerned that neither of the two sides had been playing scintillating rugby this season.

Then the search began for the ultimate ‘Super Fan’

Marks Hbhele from the Samrand area got the nod.

He is an ardent Bulls supporter and rarely misses a game at Loftus. His colourful, whacky attire is a dead giveaway and there is no mistaking who he supports.

His ultimate dream is to travel abroad and watch his beloved Bulls in action.

Rugby-mad brothers Tino and Janinho Lipema are also regulars and are distantly related to Bulls winger Jamba Ulengo. Despite patchy form, they believe the Bulls will still give the fans something to get excited about.

Stefan Wainstein has lived in Johannesburg all his life, but he and his family are all Cheetahs fans and watch their team on every possible occasion, even in Bloemfontein and beyond.

Although he can’t single out a specific reason, he has supported the men in orange since 1976.

He is particularly saddened by the fact that the Cheetahs may cease to exist by the end of the current Super Rugby season.

On this occasion it was the Bulls fans that left smiling as the home side used their ‘Get out of Jail Free’ card and gained a 20-14 victory.
