Player too good for other captains
Updated | By Trevor Cramer
Host Gary Player, former Springbok rugby captain John Smit and ex Manchester United and England footballer Andy Cole took part in a 'Captain's Challenge' ahead of the opening round of the Gary Player Invitational charity golf tournament at the Lost City.
The annual Gary Player Invitational, now in it's 16th year, draws together captains of industry from across the business spectrum, sports stars, golfers and celebrities, as they come together to raise money for charity under the banner of #GolfandGiving.
Never one to shy away from a challenge, host Gary Player took part in a "Captain's Challenge" on the Lost City Golf Course driving range against former Springbok rugby captain John Smit and former Manchester United and England footballer Andy Cole.
All three stars had to attempt to get nearest the hole off the tee, but using the ball from their chosen sports.
It was the 81-year-old wily pro' Gary Player, who immediately raised the bar by dropping his tee shot dead on the green within a foot of the flag.
Needless to say neither Smit or Cole could match Mr Player's first effort with a rugby and soccer ball -- Game over!
As always the underlying theme of the GPI week is #GolfandGiving and just over R3 million was raised on Friday at the Gala Dinner for the Gary Player Foundation’s nominated charities.
