Rugby Championship adopts new bonus point system
Updated | By AFP
Governing body SANZAAR said Thursday it will adopt the modified bonus point system used in Super Rugby this season for this year's four-nation Rugby Championship.
The tournament, featuring southern hemisphere powers New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Argentina, will replace its four-try bonus point system with a bonus point awarded to a team finishing three or more tries ahead of its opponent.
The bonus point for losing by seven or fewer points remains unchanged.
SANZAAR chief Andy Marinos said Super Rugby had produced "some of the most exciting and complete 80-minute games in the history of the competition this season, spurred on by the introduction of the new bonus point system".
"We believe that across the SANZAAR tournaments, for the sake of the players, broadcasters and the fans, we should have consistency in terms of the tournament points system," he added.
This year's Rugby Championship will also include a match played at London's Twickenham Stadium for the first time between Australia and Argentina on October 8, SANZAAR confirmed.
It will be a nominated home game for the Pumas, who will play their other home matches in Salta and Buenos Aires.
The Rugby Championship kicks off on August 20.
