The Springboks faced tough competition and were nominated along with English football giants Liverpool and the US Women's Football Team for the coveted Team of the Year award.
Springbok Captain Siya Kolisi was joined by several team mates on stage to collect the trophy at the glitzy award that was attended by the best in the sporting world.
SARU says South Africa's victory at the world cup in Yokohama last November united several communities in the country.
""We are absolutely bursting with pride and would like to congratulate Rassie, Siya and the Springbok team, as well as the management for receiving this fantastic award," said SA Rugby President Mark Alexander in the statement.
"They were so heroic on the field and through their excellent off-field conduct, they were true examples of excellent South African ambassadors."
"Our country can be very proud of this team and what they have accomplished in such a short space of time. "
