SA's own 'Scrum Doctor' surveys schoolboy packs

Pieter de Villiers at Craven Week

While he works with the senior national squad's pack regularly, he has now taken time out to survey one of the key elements of the game across age group rugby.

This week he is keeping an eagle eye on the art of scrumming and offering input and advice to coaches at the annual Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week at Kearsney College in KwaZulu-Natal.

But it wasn't the famous green and gold Springbok jersey that he wore through his international career. He chose to play for his adopted country France after moving to Stade Francais in 1997 and made 69 Test appearances for the Tricolores.

He retired due to recurring neck problems in 2008 and with constant changes in scrum laws. De Villiers linked up with the Springboks on request from former head coach Heyneke Meyer as a scrum specialist in 2012.

Trevor Cramer, who is covering the Coca-Cola Craven Week for Jacaranda FM, managed to chat to De Villiers who shared some of his thoughts...
