Singh presented the medal to South African swimmer, Tatjana Schoenmaker, who won silver in the 100m Women’s Breaststroke on Tuesday.

In a statement, Singh described the moment as thrilling.

“My heartiest congratulations go to Tatjana Schoenmaker for winning the silver medal in the 100m Women’s Breaststroke. It was thrilling for me to have witnessed first-hand Tatjana outpacing her competitors in a manner that seemed so effortless when she set the new Olympic Record on Sunday and to see her achieve a career highlight today. As a South African, it made me so proud to have the privilege of presenting her with the medal which also marked Team South Africa’s first medal in Tokyo,” reads the statement.

Singh congratulated team South Africa and expressed his hope  for more medals to come.

“I also congratulate the Team South Africa squad members who have performed so well including Chad Le Clos who won the semi-finals of the Men's 200m Butterfly and now proceeds to the finals; Bianca Buitendag who qualified for the semi-finals of the Women's Shortboard Surfing; and our Rugby 7’s team, the Bitzboks for winning their opening pool games against Ireland and Kenya so convincingly yesterday.

Our athletes competing here in Tokyo are the best in their respective codes, and we are hopeful that their performances will generate more medals. Together with all South Africans, I am looking forward to seeing our Olympic Squad give off their best as they participate in the Games.”

The Olympic Games will end on 8 August 2021.
