Springboks nominated for Laureus Team of the Year

Rugby World Cup champions Springboks have been nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards Team of the Year.

Hosted in Berlin on on February 17, the landmark 2020 awards will recognise the top sporting achievements during 2019.

 

The Springboks' wrapped up the 2019 season with a 32-12 victory against England in Japan, earning their third world crown in rugby's paramount tournament.

 

The team will go head to head with UK football team Liverpool FC, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, Spain Men's Basketball Team, Canada's Toronto Raptors Basketball  and the United States Women's Football Team.

Kolisi took the prize following a poll of the RUWC's 200-plus members ahead of their annual dinner in London. The 28-year-old flanker led South Africa to World Cup glory last year, when England were crushed in the final in Japan.

The Springboks won the category at the 2008 Laureus Awards having triumphed at the 2007 World Cup the year prior.

 

The nomination coincides with the 20 year anniversary of the awards where Nelson Mandela spoke the words, 'Sport has the power to change the world; to unite people in a way little else does'.

 

Another South African, former swimming sensation Natalie du Toit, is in line for the Sporting Moment from the last 20 years.

The greatest sportsmen, sportswomen and teams now have just over a month to wait to see if they have won a prestigious Laureus Statuette at the world's pre-eminent international sports Awards Ceremony in Berlin on February 17.
