The defending champions dominated the first half of the DSTV Premiership encounter with the Buccaneers on Saturday.

Brian Onyango scored the only goal of the match in the 35th minute.

The win stretched Sundowns’ lead over Swallows at the top of the league to three points, although the Birds have a game in hand.

“The game went very well, three points was very important for us,” said Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi after the game.

“We knew it was going to be a six-pointer for us. I am happy with the boys. I am happy with the coaches and everybody else within the team that did very well.”

Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer felt they deserved at least a point from the game.

“We know that Sundowns is good with the ball but in the end, it did not end as a draw.”

The focus now shifts to the continent for both teams, with Sundowns hosting Jwaneng Galaxy on Tuesday while Pirates are at home to Sagrada Esperanca on Wednesday.
