In what is rugby sevens’ golden year, the 2015-16 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series for both men and women promises to be the biggest and best to date, kicking off in Dubai from Thursday to Saturday.

With new iconic global destinations, a new commercial model and record interest, the vibrant men’s and women’s series are set to reach and inspire new audiences worldwide with fans getting their first taste of action after a seven-month wait at 7he Sevens Stadium.

South Africa and New Zealand are the defending champions in Dubai for the men and the women and their coaches Neil Powell and Sean Horan were both present at the official launch of the tournament on Tuesday.

“It is exciting to be back, we have fond memories here,” said New Zealand women’s coach Horan. “Three years, final all times, and we’ve won two of those three.

“We’ve also seen the women’s side of Dubai grow and that is the exciting thing with where we are now and where we are going. It is a great feeling of a real cool international tournament with millions and millions of viewers, the fans love it, and the competition is at the highest level – what more do you want?”

It’s a season that will have the road to Rio at the forefront of all conversations, with Rugby Sevens rapidly emerging as one of the world’s most exciting Olympic sports and both series playing a key part in the Olympic countdown.

“I think it’s different for the players and the coaches and management staff. We try to keep them focused on the step-by-step process and if we can nail that then we know the outcome will take care of itself.

“It is at the back of the minds though and the players know where it is going, but for us as management it is about the bigger picture.”

Speaking at the press conference, Gary Chapman, President, Emirates Group Services, said: “We are proud that it is today the biggest and most popular sporting event on the Dubai calendar. Just recently we were voted Dubai’s Favourite Sporting Event at the ‘What’s on Awards’ for the 12th time, which is great recognition from the fans and spectators.”

Philippe Bourdarias, World Rugby General Manager for Competitions, added: “Dubai represents the start of an exciting journey for World Rugby as we get set for a massive season ahead. With the men’s series expanded to 10 iconic destinations around the globe as we continue the journey towards the Olympic Games in Rio 2016, we have the opportunity to reach and inspire new audiences and all teams look forward to showcasing our sport on the greatest stage of them all.” - ANA
