Wanderers set to go pink again

The Standard Bank Proteas will be dressed in pink for the third Momentum One-Day International (ODI) against Sri Lanka on Saturday 4th February at Bidvest Wanderers Stadium, with the match celebrating five years of supporting PinkDrive, South Africa’s premier breast cancer community charity.

Wanderers Pink

PinkDrive is an organisation committed to improving breast cancer education and awareness. It prides itself in providing preventative screening services to women (and men) across South Africa.

Bidvest, Momentum, and Cricket South Africa (CSA) have issued an invitation to all the fans attending the third ODI to dress in pink in support of breast cancer awareness.

A capacity crowd is expected to turn up at one of the most iconic annual cricketing events in the world.

The commercial partners have also underpinned their unwavering commitment to breast cancer awareness through generous financial support.

- Bidvest will donate R1 000 for every boundary scored

- Team sponsors, Standard Bank, will donate R10 000 for every catch taken in the match

- Momentum will donate R100 000 if a player punches the ball into the big inflatable Momentum 'M'

- Momentum will also offer R10 000 for every six hit into the Momentum Family Area

“The annual Pink Day ODI featured at the Bidvest Wanderers stadium is a big occasion for us,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat. “With the risk of breast cancer and its high impact on a family, we are proud of our support in raising awareness and mobilising cricket fans through the PinkDrive campaign.

“PinkDrive is one of our foremost social programmes and proves how sport can play a broader role in society.

“I would especially like to thank the Boards of Pakistan, India, the West Indies, England and now Sri Lanka whose players and team management have wholeheartedly supported the spirit of our Pink Day ODIs. This is truly what sport can do.”

Danie van der Bergh, head of Brand, Momentum, expressed his delight with the involvement of Momentum with tangible support of PinkDrive and in raising awareness for breast cancer.

He said Momentum’s core values focus on their commitment to the Financial Wellness of families, which includes the importance of preventative awareness, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and the early detection of any sign of illness.

This will be the fifth time the Proteas play in pink, significant as they remain undefeated in pink.

The four previous Pink ODIs contributed more than R2 million in support of PinkDrive’s aim of purchasing additional mobile mammography and gynaecology trucks. Funds also contribute towards keeping PinkDrive’s current fleet of three Mammogram / gynaecological diagnostic trucks, one Educational Unit and five education vehicles on the road.

To date (January 2017), PinkDrive has provided more than 11 000 mammograms, conducted more than 106 500 clinical examinations and directly educated more than 279 000 people on breast health.  Millions more are made aware of the preventative healthcare message via Pink Day match broadcasts.
