Wayde van Niekerk wins big at SA Sports Awards

South African women and men in sport were honoured during the glamorous SA Sports Awards the past weekend.

Olympic gold medallist Wayde Van Niekerk walked away with most of the awards, with Caster Semenya named Sport Women of the Year.


Former Springbok rugby captain Francois Pienaar received the Steve Tshwete Lifetime Achiever Award for his contribution to rugby, while Mamelodi Sundowns were recognised as team of the year.


The SA Sport Awards recognise and honour individuals and teams who have excelled both on and off the field and nominees were honoured for their outstanding sporting achievements during the past year. 


Charl du Toit, who won two gold medals and broke the 100m world record in his class at the Rio Paralympics, was named Sportsman of the Year with a Disability. 

Ilse Hayes, who pocketed two silver medals at the Games, was announced as Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability.
