Going away for the holidays?  Stressed about all the things you have to do?  Need a list?  Well, read on and find some useful tips if you are planning a trip away from home this summer.

Make sure you switch all your plug points off and unplug any unnecessary appliances (kettle, toaster, microwave).  Due to the electrical storms in Gauteng, this will avoid your appliances being struck by lightning.  To save energy, switch off your geyser for the time you are away.  When you get home after your break, switch it on before you start unpacking your car and by the time you are done, your geyser will be ready for you to enjoy a hot shower.

Have a checklist of items you may need for you trip such as a cellphone charger, 2 pin plugs and snacks for the road.  Call ahead of time to confirm your reservation and get directions if it is to a place you are not familiar with.

If you are going overseas, inform your credit card that you will be out of the country should you wish to use it.  Leave copies of your passport and itinerary with someone back home.  Make sure you have travel insurance should anything unforeseen occur.  Travel with a light medicine kit (something mild for headaches, tummy aches, plasters, cough syrup wrapped in cling wrap to avoid spilling, antihistamines and insect repellent).  Be careful when travelling and always keep expensive belongings in a safe.  When walking amongst crowds, make sure your wallet is not easily accessible to avoid petty theft.

Check the weather beforehand so you are prepared for the climate when you land.  If you are going somewhere cold in the northern hemisphere, carry a jacket on the plane so you can be covered once you land.  If you are going somewhere sunny, make sure to pack a cap, sunglasses and sunblock.  For ladies, carry some nail polish remover and nail polish for those lazy days on the beach.

If you have pets, organise with someone to house sit while you are away.  Not only will your pets be taken care of, but your home will be too.  Make sure to leave emergency telephone numbers for yourself and friends/family nearby so you can be contacted should the need arise.

Lastly, have fun!  You have worked hard all year for this.  So spend your time happy and relaxed wherever in the world you may be.
