This bathroom item is dirtier than your toilet

You might think the toilet is one of the dirtiest places in your house, but what if we told you, you were deeply mistaken?

According to Initial, an international hygiene company, the toilet is by far not the dirtiest item in your house, nor is it the dirtiest item in your bathroom.

The dirtiest items in our homes are the ones we often overlook, and according to cleaning expert Bailey Carson, the most overlooked item in the bathroom is usually the bathmat.

"After every shower, we step out onto our bath mat, allowing it to soak in any excess water or soap that might be dripping," Carson said.

"While this prevents our floors from getting damp, the reoccurring build-up of water when left untreated can lead to mould growth."

The bath mat is also defenceless against bacteria spraying from flushing toilets, if that wasn't gross enough.

This leads to unwanted bacteria, and that is why frequent washing is important should someone want to keep their bathroom a mould-free environment.

However, “A survey found a third admitted to washing their mats just two times a year,” says Rikki Fothergill, a cleaning expert from the UK e-commerce company Big Bathroom Shop.

Initial also revealed other household items that might be dirtier than your toilet, and these include:

  • Cutting Board
  • Pet’s Food Bowl
  • Mobile Devices
  • Keyboard
  • Handles, Switches, and Buttons
  • Kitchen Sponge
  • Remote Control
  • Toothbrush
  • Office Desk
  • Reusable Shopping Bags
