New Cape Town traffic lights to be implemented across SA

In 2022, The City of Cape Town introduced new traffic lights that were trialled at busy intersections within the city.

The objective of these new traffic signals was to reduce confusion among motorists and public transport operators in the city with the new traffic signal system.

According to TopAuto, the new traffic lights were first trialled for a six-month period.

If they were successful after the six months, they would be implemented across the MyCiTi grid and included in the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual for use by other metros in the country.

In March 2024, TopAuto reported that Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility Rob Quintas announced that the project had succeeded in its intended goal and may soon start rolling out in other cities.

"We intend to implement these [traffic signals] across the city, and also, it will be included in the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual for use by other cities and transport systems," said Quintas

"This is just another example of how the City of Cape Town is the pioneering agent for road safety."

The new traffic lights use white signals to guide whether MyCiti buses have the right of way on the road instead of the traditional red, amber, and green.

According to Quintas, people often mistook the MyCiti bus signals for regular vehicle traffic lights, which caused a lot of tension on the roads and even collisions.
