“I hope I don’t get killed for being a woman in South Africa today” – Liesl Laurie
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Liesl Laurie shared a heartbreaking account of living in South Africa as a woman.
Activists have warned of an “epidemic” of violence against women in South Africa after a spate of killings and rapes sparked outrage in a country with one of the world’s highest murder rates.
However, we keep hearing such stories with no solution at hand.
Liesl Laurie took her experience as a woman in South Africa to air on 19 October 2020 on Jacaranda FM.

Laurie says: "After being harassed in a parking lot for the 3rd time this week... And today a man told me to f*ck off for not wanting to entertain his advances toward me! I AM TIRED!!!"
Jacaranda FM Breakfast host, Martin Bester, Melinda Bam, and former Miss Universe Demi Lee Tebow commented on Liesl Laurie’s Instagram post.
Liesl Laurie continued: "A man recently asked me “why don’t you ever take a run in the nature reserve right next to your house...” I replied “because I don’t want to be raped and killed...” that response came about without me even thinking because that’s the reality we as women live in. In South Africa and the most of the world."
