More than 120 fake doctors allegedly arrested

Minister of Health Joe Phaahla said that more than 120 people had been arrested for pretending to be registered doctors.

A frightening number of fake doctors have been arrested, according to Minister of Health Joe Phaahla.

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) established an office to clamp down on residents pretending to be registered doctors.

Minister Joe Phaahla confirmed that these unregistered practitioners are common in the private sector as they can be paid in cash or operate in the practices of registered doctors.

“According to the Health Professions Council of South Africa, 124 persons have been arrested for practising medicine without registration with the HPCSA,” said Phaahla.

SAMA (South Africa Medical Association) chairperson Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa said that unregistered medical professional is a “big problem”.

“It is a known occurrence around the world, and South Africa is not an exception.”

He also applauded the HPCSA for setting up their office, which has helped to arrest 124 fake doctors.
