Mmusi Maimane has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to react to his petition.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the resumption of the academic year, however, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says only certain schools in Tshwane have personal protective equipment (PPE).
Mmusi Maimane, who recently launched the Movement for One South Africa (Mosa), believes the department has not put in place the necessary measures to ensure the safety of pupils at schools.
Maimane’s petition serves to prevent schools from reopening on 1 June. The signatures reached the 155,000 mark and Maimane has given the President 48 hours to explain his reasons behind the opening of schools.

Maimane fears there will be a spike in the rate of coronavirus infections because of the difficulty of social distancing measures at schools.
Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to the politician on 26 May about the petition he feels strongly about.
"While the department is making commands, the reality is the department is not able to implement the changes and PPE’s," Maimane says.

What if Ramaphosa does not reply in 48-hours?
"We’ll have to compel him legally to do so," Maimane adds confidently.
