Thieves dig tunnel into liquor store in Johannesburg

Liquor sales will resume on Monday, but thieves in Johannesburg could not wait.

Under level three, all but high-risk sectors of the economy will be allowed to reopen, as will schools and places of worship.

Liquor sales will resume, but for home consumption only.

However, thieves in Johannesburg could not wait for 1 June 2020.

The two-month drink ban during lockdown gave thieves enough time in Johannesburg to dig a tunnel into a liquor store.

The store was locked from the outside and secured to protect the stock from thieves during lockdown levels 5 and 4. 

The manager unlocked the store on Friday to prepare for an influx of customers from 1 June - and he got a nasty surprise.

Apparently, R300,000 worth of liquor including whiskey, brandy, ciders, vodka, and beer was stolen.
