Just last week, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi shared news about these new number plates.

Recently, Panyaza Lesufi mentioned that as of April 1st, Gauteng residents would have to re-register their vehicles in order to receive new high-tech number plates.

While there is still a lot of speculation that this might not happen at all, the idea behind the new system is to help combat vehicle crime.

It is also said that the Gauteng number plate system has run out of options for newly registered vehicles.

This all might still be up in the air but a potential new design has been making its way across various social media platforms.

And South Africans have some thoughts.

@DKNMOHAMMED on X has shared this "new" design, although there has been no confirmation that this will be used or implemented.

As of right now, the response has been anything but positive:

Most people don't have a serious issue with the design, but they are not convinced that the change is truly necessary.

Time will only tell who will be proven to be correct...
