#NewsExtended: What does the extension of Zimbabwean special permits mean
Recently, Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi extended the validity of Zimbabwean special permits by six months. Christelle du Toit breaks the topic down.
The Zimbabwean special permits were set to expire at the end of this year, which would have left thousands of Zimbabweans with no choice but to go back home or to remain in South Africa illegally.

The move by the Minister of Home Affairs to terminate the special permits has spurred many civil society organisations into action.
After receiving a report, Motsoaledi decided that it would be approoriate to extend the validity of the permits by a further six months, but with a clear directive that there will be no further extensions.

The extension was welcomed by Janet Munakamwe, chairperson of the Africa Diaspora Workers’ Network who commented: "We are glad that Home Affairs and the minister have actually come to their senses and considered this particular decision in line with our African principle of Ubuntu".
