These food items cost 60% more than they did six years ago

When it comes to current food prices, the struggle is real for South Africans.

Most South Africans are feeling the strain of inflation and rising food prices.

According to Business Tech, several food items commonly found in South Africans' shopping baskets have increased in price, with some almost doubling in price in the last few years.

A new tool by The Outlier is currently tracking the prices of 12 of these items using Stats SA data dating back to 2017. 

This data shows that the prices of six out of the 12 items increased by more than 60% over six years. 

Business Tech reports that some of these prices are almost double the inflation over the same period as South Africa's Consumer Price Inflation (CPI), which has been around 34% since 2017.

The top three items, potatoes, eggs and instant coffee, more than doubled in price.
