Good Morning Angels Operation Healing Hands gets R100,000
Jacaranda FM

On Wednesday, we checked in with some of our Good Morning Angels recipients and we had a surprise for a very special group of Angels.

1. BAKKIES BOTHA AND THE FREE STATE FARM FIRE FUND -  GOOD MORNING ANGELS - 23 OCTOBER to 11 NOVEMBER 2020

Devastated by fire in 2022 - Western Free State farmers now have their own fire fighting power, thanks to Bakkies Botha and all the Angels

BACKGROUND: In October/November 2020, Jacaranda FM listeners donated R5 million to assist farmers in the Western Free State after devastating fires. Good Morning Angels partnered with Springbok rugby legend, Bakkies Botha to immediately distribute assistance in the form of animal feed, medical supplies and infrastructure repair to the affected farmers to the value of R4 million. With the remaining funds, the construction of a special fire truck and a special water truck was commissioned, to equip farmers in the region to respond quicker and more effectively to any future fires. Both these trucks were loaded on a low bed and delivered to Hoopstad last week Thursday.

2. LEE OOSTHUIZEN AND OPERATION HEALING HANDS - GOOD MORNING ANGELS - 11 AUGUST 2021

Lee Oosthuizen: From being trapped in a wheelchair, to dancing his way into the studio!

BACKGROUND: When we met 51-year-old Lee Oosthuizen last year - he was in a wheelchair. He was in severe pain, without a functioning right hip, and virtually bed-ridden. As a lighting and events engineer, Lee was unable to do his physical job for four years. Instead of being a breadwinner and provider, Lee needed assistance from his wife and two sons, just to get by. Lee’s problems started in 2017 when he broke his hip in a freak accident. He was assisted in a state hospital, where his hip was mended with screws and pins. A few months later, he had a severe blood clot that almost ended his life … and then he tripped and fell on his repaired hip. The screws in his hip snapped - but this time he needed a specialized, very expensive hip prosthesis, which the state hospital could not provide.

Operation Healing Hands found Lee a sponsored hip joint and offered the specialized surgery and treatment for free. Lee raised half of the funds needed to cover the theatre costs and Good Morning Angels covered the balance of R50,000.

On 5 November 2021, Lee finally received his life-changing surgery and today he can dance his way into the studio!

Listen to what Lee had to say after his operation:

Operation Healing Hands was started by Dr Helené Basson in July 2016 - as a Mandela Day initiative. The idea was simple: private medical professionals give of their time and skills for free, to assist state patients - like Lee - at no cost to the patient. Several doctors and other medical professionals as well as hospitals, clinics and medical supply companies have since joined. To date, Operation Healing Hands has performed 635 surgeries and given primary care to 1118 patients. That’s an average of 16 patients a month!!

This Mandela month alone, Operation Healing Hands will be assisting another 56 patients with surgeries!
