A video has caused uproar and confusion in South Africa showing how eating a hot cross bun could get you in trouble with the law.

The video shows a police officer using a breathalyzer to measure his alcohol levels before and after eating the treat, and the results are shocking, to say the least. The officer first breathed into the breathalyzer and measured at 0.0 mg. The officer then took a few bites of the yummy treat and repeated the test, the result this time was 0.21 mg.

The legal blood alcohol limit in South Africa is less than 0.05 g per 100 ml.

The legal breath alcohol limit in South Africa is less than 0.24 mg in 1000 ml of breath. If he had another hot cross bun and got behind the wheel, he'd get arrested.

According to research done by Academic Gastroenterologist Dr Vincent Ho, from the University of Western Sydney, consuming hot cross buns can give you false alcohol reading on a breathalyzer.

The expert says: “The spice flavouring has a bit of alcohol in it, and that can all be picked up, particularly by a breathalyser which picks up the presence of alcohol. Breathalysers can be quite sensitive.”

Apparently, breath mints can also give a false reading on breathalyzers. For more on the results of the research, please read on ABC News.
