Girl speaks out against short skirts and make-up ban in school
Updated | By Poelano Malema
A student who wasn’t impressed after her school banned girls from wearing short skirts and make-up has expressed her views in a video that has now gone viral.
Kambrya College in Melbourne, Australia, is a victim of a recent "pornography ring" scandal, which saw the school taking hard measures that included banning girls from wearing short skirts, putting on make-up, and even sending "sexy selfies” in order to protect their integrity.
But one student, Faith Sobotker, who wasn’t impressed with the ban, had a very strong message for the school, which she recorded in a video that has now gone viral. "My self respect is doing what makes me happy. You can't tell me what ladylike is because we don't live in the '50s any more. I am looking for equality. I am 15 years old. You do not get to sexualise me like that, you do not get to tell me that my body is sacred, because it isn't," she said in the video.
Faith is not the only one who isn’t impressed with the school’s decision. A parent, Catherine Manning, accused the school of slut-shaming the girls by calling an assembly to discuss their appearance, Mashable reported. She said the school should focus on the perpetrators rather than the girls. Below is her post.
“We live in a society that makes drawing the line between enforcing rules and infringing on people’s rights such a tight rope to walk. I don’t think the school was ill intentioned, I do think we live in a time that’s overly sexualised and it makes parenting difficult,” says Bridget.
