Granny finally gives up skiing at 102

Britain’s oldest skier, Hilda Jamieson, has finally hung up her polls at the age of 102.

Jamieson has been skiing for 80 years and was unfortunately forced to give up the sport due to a degenerative eye condition that almost left her blind, Metro reported.

"I love it so much but I’ve had a good innings," she told the publication.

Jamieson developed the love for the sport in the 1930s, and she used to enjoy skiing with her husband David Jamieson, who died in 2002.

Remembering those past times, Jamieson told reporters: "It was about two minutes' skiing and then you had to climb and climb up to an hour again but it was worth it. It was just a group of friends having a great weekend together. Nowadays nobody walks, they just take a ski lift - and I doubt they could walk up those slopes."

The two were even pioneers of the sport in Scotland and Jamieson says her husband's love for the sport compelled him to build the Glenshee Ski Centre in Aberdeenshire, which now has 27 ski lifts, 36 runs, and is billed as one of the best winter sports resorts in the United Kingdom.

"He didn't want it to be just for rich and privileged people - he never took any money from it," Jamieson added.

Years later, the couple's children are now champions in skiing.

One of their daughters, Helen Somerville (69), who participated in the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, says she can't live without the sport.

"I didn't have a choice. We were put in the back of the car and mum would drag us up the hill while dad carried the skis. We grew up in the ski club and everyone was your family. Skiing is born in you and it will always be in you. I couldn't live without it," Somerville told reporters.

Jamieson is not the only granny who is passionate about skiing. Watch 92-year-old Zulma Blanco skiing the slopes of Cathedral Mountain in Argentina in the video below.
