Outrage after 10-year-old travels from KZN to Joburg alone

How old is old enough for a child to travel alone?

A WITS student found a 10-year-old girl lost and wandering the streets of Johannesburg, so decided to help her find her family.
The student, named Cebile Lekhuleni, uploaded a post on Facebook asking people to assist in tracking the child's family down. The post quickly gained traction, receiving over 8,000 shares.
In the post, Cebile says she found the little girl lost in Joburg at Rissik Street. She says the child's aunt put her in a taxi to Joburg from KZN to visit her mother, and the child didn't have a phone on her or any way of contacting her mother. She was simply told to look for a red building.
Concerned social media users shared their views and concerns. Some asked if the parents were aware of the rape epidemic in the country or if they knew how dangerous the city is, especially for an unaccompanied minor.
This story is not unique, as many other children all over the world have travelled alone to visit their relatives using public transport.
With the help of social media and the police, the child has been reunited with her mother.
