The Washington Post reported that a mother from Detroit, Michigan was sentenced to 7 days in jail after she disobeyed a court order to have her 9-year-old son vaccinated.

Rebecca Bredow says that she is passionate about the health and wellbeing of her children, but she cannot vaccinate them as it goes against her religious beliefs, according to The Sun.

Rebecca says she and her ex-husband had both agreed to space out their children’s vaccinations, and planned to suspend them completely. The father of the children has since changed his mind, which is why Bredow was brought before the court and eventually sentenced.

Watch as Rebecca pleads her case with the judge below:

Many religions offer guidance about vaccination. According to Why I Immunize.org, Hinduism and Judaism are in support of vaccination and, while they initially expressed concern about the ingredients of certain vaccines, Roman Catholics are not against vaccination.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are neutral on the issue of vaccinations. Members of the Dutch Reformed Church have a mystery of refusing vaccination. Christian Scientists, however, do not accept that diseases are real, and believe that diseases can be healed only through focused prayer.
