Flying hot dog sends baseball fan to the emergency room

Baseball fans expect to see a stray pitch flying into the stands, but they would not expect to be severely injured by a hot dog!

When you go to a stadium to watch your favourite team compete in your sport of choice, you certainly don't expect to go home with a blue eye.

Yet that is exactly what happened to Pennsylvania woman Kathy McVay at a recent Philadelphia Phillies vs St Louis Cardinals baseball game. During a break in play, Phillie Phanatic, Philadelphia's mascot, was rolled out onto the pitch for the customary hot dog projectile launching.

Phillies fans are familiar with the machine which shoots duct tape-wrapped hot dogs into the stands. What they are not used to is seeing one of those sandwiches hit a woman square in the face, giving her a blue eye.

Kathy did not have time to register the flying hot dog before it hit her: "The next thing I know he shot it in our direction and bam! It hit me like a ton of bricks. My glasses flew."

A trip to the emergency room cleared Kathy of any major injuries aside from a "small hematoma"; Kathy will have to ice her eye every 20 minutes until it is healed.

The Philadelphia Phillies have reached out to Kathy to apologise and offer her free tickets to upcoming games.

Kathy herself is not too fussed about the incident, only saying that spectators need to "be careful" and laughing along with family members who find the assault by a hot dog highly humorous.
