Earlier in February, news broke that the royal couple would sit down with Oprah Winfrey for a tell-all interview. Winfrey revealed that nothing was off-limits and it was to be the biggest interview ever.

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, and her husband Prince Harry, sat down with Winfrey for a tell-all interview about racism within the royal family, Archie not receiving a royal title, struggling with mental health, and Prince Charles cutting ties with his youngest son.

In January 2020, the royal couple stepped down as active royals and have since moved to the United States to set up a new life with their son, Archie.

After the couple suffered a miscarriage, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, revealed why he left Britain in an interview with James Corden.

"It was never walking away. It was stepping back rather than stepping down, there was a really difficult environment as I think a lot of people saw. We all know what the British press could be like, and it was destroying my mental health, I was like 'this is toxic'. So I did what any husband and what any father would do, I needed to get my family out of there."

In the tell-all interview with Winfrey, Meghan and Harry openly spoke about being "silenced".

We break down the four most shocking moments of the interview.

Racism within the royal family

Markle revealed that “concerns and conversations about how dark his (Archie's) skin might be when he’s born” were brought up to her husband ahead of her son’s birth. Winfrey’s shocked reaction: "What?"

“You’re not going to tell me who had that conversation?" Winfrey asked Meghan.

“I think that would be very damaging to them,” Markle continued.

The reason why Archie never received a royal title

Meghan Markle said the royal family didn’t want her son Archie to be a prince nor to be given security - despite previous claims that it was a decision made to allow the child to enjoy a "normal" life.

According to Markle, the decision for Archie not to have a title nor security was made in tandem with “concerns and conversations about how dark (Archie’s) skin might be when he’s born”.

Meghan said she was not given a good explanation for the reasoning, but that she would have accepted a title for Archie if it “meant he was going to be safe”.

“And it’s not our decision to make. Even though I have a lot of clarity of what comes with the titles good and bad...that is their birthright to then make a choice about,” Markle continued.

The couple revealed that they are expecting a girl

Struggling with mental health

Markle revealed that she considered suicide or self-harm after asking for help but getting none.

“I just didn’t want to be alive any more. And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought. And I remember how he (Harry) just cradled me.”

Prince Charles cutting ties with his youngest son and using the money his mother left him

Prince Harry discussed his relationship with his father, Prince Charles, with Winfrey.

When Winfrey asked why Prince Charles stopped taking his calls, Harry took a long pause.

“I had three conversations with my grandmother and two conversations with my father before he stopped taking my calls. And then he said, can you put this all in writing?”

"Because by that point, I took matters into my own hands. I needed to do this for my family. This is not a surprise to anybody, it's really sad that it's gotten to this point, but I've got to do something, for my own mental health and my wife's. And for Archie's as well, because I could see where this is headed."

Harry also revealed he was "cut off" financially from the royal family, and he only managed to survive because his mother "saw it coming."

"My family cut me off in the first half of 2020, but I got what my mum left me," Harry told Winfrey.

Harry continued by saying if it wasn't for the money his mother, Princess Diana had left him then he wouldn't have been able to afford security for himself, Meghan and Archie.

"You asked what my mother thought of this, and I think she saw it coming," he said.

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, and Prince Harry's exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey will air on Monday, 8 March, on M-Net 101, in South Africa.
