Make My Monday Follow-up: Recipient shortlisted for a life-saving eye operation

The Scenic Drive with Rian surprised a listener with a specially designed iPhone and an operation that will change his life.

We received a message from Ryno Booysen, who lives in Belfast, Mpumalanga. He says he lost his sight two years ago after he mistook fibreglass hardener for eye drops. He had a cataract and the fibreglass hardener almost completely blinded him.

He lost sight in his left eye many years ago due to an accident, and now his right eye has almost 0% vision. He says he can only see shadowy movements in his right eye.

He says he needs a phone that will allow him to be a bit more independent. The one he currently has is not “visually impaired friendly”.

After a demand from our other listeners to help him with the life-changing operation, Good Morning Angels decided to make Ryan Booysen a candidate for a possible operation.

HERE IS HIS MESSAGE:

"Hallo, my naam is Ryno. Ek het my sig verloor so twee jaar terug. Kan julle my dalk help met 'n selfoon wat geskik is vir blinde mense. Asseblief Rian."

WHAT HE IS GETTING:

Our friends at Vodacom will be sending him a brand new iPhone with built-in software designed to make life easier for the visually impaired.

Vodacom have a department aimed at giving people with disabilities access to communication, and they will also send a technician to Ryno to train him on using the device.
