The beautiful photograph of the late Princess of Wales is not familiar to you because it was taken by famed photographer David Bailey in the late 1980s. The image was kept by Bailey for his archive and was never made public before.

Princess Diana posed for the photo in 1988 when she was around 27 years old.

The curators at Historic Royal Palaces state that the late royal appears "stoic, reserved, and looking away from the viewer."

In the early hours of 31 August 1997, Princess Diana died in hospital after being injured in a car crash in a road tunnel in Paris.
