Chef Reuben Riffel recently opened Reuben's @ The Capital in Sandton - and Rian is excited! Chef Reuben will surely have some interesting fusion dishes on his menu, but it was the more unexpected flavour pairings that Rian wanted to ask him about.

South African restaurateur and award-winning chef Reuben Riffel opened a new restaurant, Reuben's @ The Capital, at the Capital Moloko Hotel in Sandton at the beginning of August this year. 

The opening of the restaurant means discerning diners who enjoy Chef Riffel's self-described eclectic and unpretentious fare will no longer have to budget for a trip to the Western Cape

Chef Riffel enjoys experimenting with local flavours, using them to add new life to traditional dishes and to create recipes that have an international flair, while maintaining their homegrown charm. This leads him to strange taste combinations, one of which he demonstrated with a Marmite, snoek pate, and aged cheddar cheese breakfast sandwich.

The strong flavours of snoek, Marmite, and cheese come together to create something that you will either fall in love with or never want to eat again. That's the fun of creating recipes: you never know what you're going to get.

Chef Riffel was even able to find merit in the strange fried chicken and Coke combination that caused a stir online . He and the team tasted the weird food for themselves.

Everyone was hesitant to taste the Coke and chicken combination at first, but then decided it wasn't the worst flavour they had ever experienced. You should be fine as long as you don't double dip.

It turns out the esteemed Chef's palate is up for almost any culinary challenge, as the blindfolded spice taste test proved. Chef Riffel really is so good at his job that he could do it with his eyes closed!
