Takeaway Wednesday: Bobotie
Updated | By The Scenic Drive with Rian
Will this week's recipe match your idea of the "perfect" traditional bobotie?
Gerdine Stoltz says her family loves her traditional bobotie recipe. They prefer the dish with raisins.
Here's how you can recreate the dish at home.
Ingredients
1 kg mince
2 onions
1 slice of bread
1 cup of milk
2 eggs
1 tablespoon curry powder
1 and a half tablespoons of sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
Half a tablespoon of turmeric
2 tablespoons of vinegar
6 almonds – crushed
Half a cup of raisins
Lemon zest
3 tablespoons of chutney
Method
- Brown onions and mince in a pan
- Dip bread in milk
- Mix all the ingredients together except for 1 egg, half a cup of milk and lemon zest
- Put mixture in an oven dish
- Bake for an hour and a half at 180’c
- Beat eggs and milk separately and drench over mixture after baking it
- Serve with rice and chutney
If you try the recipe at home - whether you include the raisins or not - please do share your pictures with us.
But before you venture into the kitchen, here's one last piece of advice on making the perfect bobotie from Cape Malay cuisine expert Cass Abrahams.
