Young South African activist speaks out against 'albinism killings'

Seven-year-old Lutendo Mugeri has spoken out strongly against the killing of people with albinism.

Lutendo Mugeri speaks with the confidence of a seasoned leader as he says: "If I were president, I would make sure that everyone is educated about albinism."

The seven-year-old uses this confidence and knowledge of self that belies his age when he speaks in public. He participated in the Tassie Foundation's march to the Union Buildings earlier this month and has since spoken out about the need for discrimination against people with albinism to stop immediately.

Society still attaches a stigma to albinism and treats people who live with the condition like they are less than human, calling them names, abusing them, and even killing them.

Lutendo hopes to see that changing very soon, and he has a plan to make it so. He believes education and resources are at the root of the solution to the problems people with albinism face.

Lutendo is passionate about lifting people's ignorance around albinism.

He says he wants to speak to President Cyril Ramaphosa and call on him to "do something radical" to change the plight of people with albinism in the country.
