BACKGROUND: New Beginnings is an outreach organisation that feeds six-thousand people in the Boksburg area every day. They also give shelter to some 1500 of these people in an old disused female prison building in Boksburg, where they also offer training, try to find employment and help people with alcohol and drug addiction. New Beginnings receives regular donations of bread from Albany and yogurt, yogi-sip and ultramel custard from Danone as well as products from Kellogg's and cool drink from Spar. Dit is ’n daaglikse ritueel: Hulle staan in drie lang rye – vroue met kinders; vroue; en die mans teen die muur in die winterson – en wag vir hul “rantsoen”.
“Ons gee vir sowat ’n duisend haweloses iets om te eet,” sê past. Stephen du Plessis van New Beginnings in Boksburg.
Die organisasie doen dit al jare lank. Maar wat klein begin het, laat die ou Boksburg-tronk nou letterlik uit sy spreekwoordelike nate bars.
“Daar bly ook meer as ’n duisend mense in die ou gebou. Ons gee vir hulle ook kos en ’n plek waar hulle kan was en slaap.
“Ons bied ook kursusse aan. Ons probeer om hulle weer op hul voete te bring. Dit is nie maklik nie.
“Onthou, ’n groot persentasie van die mense wat hier woon, is hier weens probleme: dwelms, huislike of ander probleme. Hulle is probleemgevalle en is almal nou saamgegooi in een plek. Dis nie maklik nie,” sê hy terwyl hy en kollegas asook helpers probeer om die kos op ’n geordende manier uit te deel.
“Soms raak hulle onbeheerbaar en dan moet ons die hekke sluit tot hulle weer gekalmeer het. Dit is ’n harde wêreld en hulle weet hoe om te oorleef en natuurlik hoe om kanse te waag,” sê hy.
Behalwe die kos wat hulle daagliks vir die haweloses uitdeel, is daar ook soggens voor nege ’n lang tou motors wat wag op hul deel. Hulle kom haal kospakkies wat by verspreidingspunte in woongebiede deur ander organisasies by byvoorbeeld kleuterskole uitgedeel word.
Die kos is alles afkomstig van bydrae deur maatskappye of organisasies wat dit eerder vir New Beginnings gee as om dit weg te gooi.
“Ek is al dikwels gekritiseer oor hoe ons die plek bestuur en bedryf, maar as ons nie na die mense kyk en ons plig as godsdienstige organisasie nakom nie, wie gaan na die mense kyk?
“Ons het nie al die antwoorde nie, maar ons doen iets,” sê hy.
