Background:

The Jakaranda Children's Homes started in 1987 in East Lynne, Pretoria. The Jakaranda Children’s Home is a non-profit organizations (NPO) that looks after the welfare of abused children. These children are removed from their parents and placed in our care by the South African children's court due to: abandonment, neglect, emotional and physical abuse.

Their primary purpose is to provide the children with clothing, housing, schooling, food, security and stability. In addition, they aim to provide the children with the necessary therapy, life skills and emotional support that they need in order to become responsible adults and curb the cycle of abuse.

The Jakaranda Children`s Home is currently looking after 250 children between the ages of 18 months and 18 years. The children are divided into groups of 13, each group living in separate houses under the supervision of house parents.

Since 2010, the Jakaranda Children's Home has been hosting a Christmas Light Festival to raise funds and to make the public aware of the children they care for. All families are invited to enjoy the lights and all the entertainment, food and stalls on offer.

To support this effort and the work of the Jakaranda Children's Home, Annique's Angelique du Toit is visiting us in studio to pledge a donation of R20 000,00 to the Jakaranda Children's Home - the perfect start for the festival!!

The festival starts this evening at 18:00 with the Big Switch On. Tickets are R10 per person!

Jakaranda Children’s Home in Pretoria hosts their annual Christmas Light Festival since 2010. We decorate the 21 houses as well as the rest of the premises with millions of Christmas lights. The decorated children’s home is then opened to the public during the festive season. During the festival a big selection of entertainment is provided such as street musicians, singers, bands, laser shows and various other types of entertainment during the month.

Purpose of the Christmas Light Festival

•    To emphasise the REAL CHRISTMAS MESSAGE to our children in the home and secondly to the public.
•    Fundraising.
•    To create awareness to the work that we do at the Jacaranda Children’s Home
•    The funds raised are used to care for all our children, to successfully execute our planning for the year ahead and for the achievement of the objectives of each house individually at the children’s home.
