Pretoria is known for its heritage as well as the long standing history that the city was built on. With many buildings and lanmarks dating back to the eighteenth century, Pretoria has many stories as well as  a few myths.

We asked Dr. Jackie Grobler to join us this morning to share a few of his stories and myths that he has come across regarding the capital city.

In the clip below, Dr. Grobler touches on the story of Alois Nelmapius who named the area of Irene after his daughter. Irene is derived from the Greek word meaning peace. His daughter used to pronounce her name with three syllables: Ireenee - it is still pronounced like this today.

Also, interesting to note that renowned British architect Herbert Baker, who designed the Pretoria Station 92 years ago, had a swastika inserted into the plaster work. This would be above the clock tower, erected in the center of the roof of the beautiful building. Many associate the swastika with Nazi Germany. Dr. Grobler also reflects on this story.

Rian was adamant that he would find the story as well as a picture of 'Lang Piet'. He was one of the early traders on church square. Pieter, or Lang Piet (ie Tall Piet) Marais was the eldest of four Marais brothers.

Dr. Grobler also managed to answer a few burning questions from some of our listeners as well as gives more insight into the allegations that former President Paul Kruger was involved with corruption. Dr. Grobler shared some light on this.
