Surviving winter in Sutherland
Updated | By Bronwyn Hardick
Situated in the heart of the Karoo, Sutherland is famous for its warm hospitality and bitterly cold winters.
With the sudden drop in temperature from chilly to icy all around the country, The Complimentary Breakfast calls two residents of Sutherland to find out how they survive the winter and put things in to perspective by comparing our version of being cold to theirs.
Listen as Mariana Bernardo is the principle of a school in Sutherland, and a keen observer of the weather in the area and Oom Gerhard Van Wyk - a born and raised Sutherland local who has seen 82 winters in the town - share their tales of surviving the coldest spot in SA.
