The elastic hair tie known as the scrunchie is synonymous with the 1990s, together with neon-coloured fitness outfits and yellow pants. But scrunchies are making a comeback.

"No New York woman with any self respect would wear a scrunchie," claimed Carrie Bradshaw in the TV series Sex and the City.

But fashion outlets such as American Apparel, Topshop and Urban Outfitters seem to think differently and are selling the hair ties in bright colours and different materials. 

There is even an Instagram account dedicated to scrunchies called @scrunchiesofinstragram.
