Getting your children to walk with you is a great idea, but in the digital age of smartphones and video games, we all know it’s easier said than done.

With television and phones taking over the lives of many youngsters, exercise tends to come at the very bottom of the activity list.

There are ways to get your children to walk with you, but the big question is, how?

Our methods aren’t tried and tested, but we think these tips can definitely help you in your pursuit of a healthier family.

Offer rewards

Knowing you’ll be rewarded for doing something can serve as extra motivation. Offer your family “rewards” for walking. It does not even have to be fancy rewards. For example, you can tell your children that 30 minutes of walking equals 30 minutes of extra play time.

Make it fun

Do not make walking seem like a chore. Make it an opportunity for family bonding time. Make it a time to tell your children fun stories and have them tell you about their day at school, dreams, and desires.

Get music

One fun thing to do is to have your children listen to their favourite artist while walking. You can buy them their favourite artist’s album and let them play the music on their cellphones or get them mp3 players.

Choose a safe place to walk

Make sure you choose to walk in a place where your family feels safe. If you have a park close by, go for it. Also avoid places that have a lot of traffic lights - you don’t want to gain momentum and then lose it by stopping.
