Would you rent clothes for your baby?
Updated | By Charis Apelgren-Coleman
An environmentally conscious Danish entrepreneur has created a business in which she rents out baby clothes to parents.
One of the ‘perks’ of becoming a new mom is the baby shower party. Sometimes you are blessed with more than one. With each baby shower comes loads of baby clothes, some that your baby will outgrow in under a month, even if the label says 3 to 6 months.
In that mix we either give away the old clothes to friends or donate them to charity.
Would you ever consider renting clothes instead of rushing to the shop to buy more?
Vigga Svensson has been in the ethical kids fashion industry for some 10 years, where she makes environmentally friendly clothes for children. However, she said she realised it was still creating a strain on the environment, as only two percent of clothes are recycled globally.
Vigga’s business was launched in 2014, and so far has some 3,000 members.
They pay a monthly membership fee of EU$55 (around R801.99) and get a bag of 16 articles of eco-friendly clothing made by the company, which are updated as the child grows from baby to toddler.
The company has about 20,000 articles of clothing in the rental system, and each item is used up to 150 times.
“Babies grow and clothes do not grow, that’s why we got the idea to rent out kids clothes,” Vigga told BBC News.
What do you do with your old clothing? Do you follow the hand-me-down model?
