Alcohol is not everyone's cup of tea or coffee. Known to many as 'liquid courage', it is certainly something that is associated with relaxation.

For some, it is indeed dangerous, as it can turn into an addiction.

And with its popularity comes an aftermath that isn't always as welcoming as that first sip.

Besides alcoholism, there are the after-effects of hangovers, side effects on your liver, your mental health, and the list could go on.

We believe this is the reason that London-based GABA Labs decided it was time for a placebo.

They are "working on a type of synthetic alcohol called ‘Alcarelle’ which reportedly provides the relaxing effects of alcohol without hangovers, balance deficiencies or any of its other negative side effects." (Oddity Central)

We have to admit the name, Alcarelle, really got us laughing out loud. It doesn't sound appealing at all, but that's just our opinion. After all, going against the history that comes with alcohol doesn't come easy.

In essence, Alcarelle will promise to bring all the positives that alcohol provides without the negatives.

“We know where in the brain alcohol has its ‘good’ effects and ‘bad’ effects, and what particular receptors mediate that – Gaba, glutamate and other ones, such as serotonin and dopamine,” GABA Labs founder, Dr David Nutt, told The Guardian in 2019. “The effects of alcohol are complicated but … you can target the parts of the brain you want to target.” (Oddity Central)

Dr Nutt is all about catering to the solutions that Alcarelle can have on the larger part of society that drinks excessively.

And we can understand that. Just his contribution to a world that is more productive but still relaxed.

"Apparently, Alcarelle is a tasteless substance that can be added to other drinks – alcoholic or non-alcoholic – to boost their tipsiness potential without the negative side effects. That’s a groundbreaking prospect in itself, considering the serious health problems linked to alcohol consumption. If people could get their ‘fix’ from synthetic alcohol without suffering damage to their liver, heart, brain, etc., that could potentially save millions of lives." (Oddity Central)
