When you think you speak Afrikaans because you add a 'ge' to everything...

It's not the first time we have seen someone create some comedic content around one of our official languages, Afrikaans

This time, it was amusing because of a Cape Town mother and her daughter's impromptu Afrikaans lesson. Watching the two bicker about right and wrong regarding a few Afrikaans phrases brought pure entertainment to many South Africans on social media

More than that, though, was the way these two interacted and the giggles they gave each other when they tried to speak Afrikaans.

Nuriyah Gallow, a digital content creator and businesswoman, decided to share how her teenage daughter, Gianna, asked her if the car was open in what she believed was Afrikaans.

Gianna asked, "Is die kar geoopened". Gallow was shocked that her Grade 10 daughter didn't know how to speak Afrikaans. Gianna tried to redeem herself by saying she doesn't take Afrikaans in school.

One person's comment hit the nail on the head, it read: "This is hilarious BUT also highlights the schooling system's flaws …those of us that took Afrikaans as a first additional language from grade R to grade 12 still cannot speak the language fluently!!!! Stop teaching the rules and teach how actually to have a conversation (vocab) so it’s not a waste of an opportunity to learn a 2nd language!"

This entertaining mom-and-daughter duo didn't stop there. They made another video in which they tried to say English phrases sent in by social media users in Afrikaans.

It's safe to say that they could use some Afrikaans lessons. We give them both an 'A' for effort and enthusiasm.
